[Moran turns on his communication device but is distracted a moment later by some task or comment.]

Not wot you're used to, sir, but best I could do under the circumstances. I can try somethin' else, if that's too much not to your liking.

[His attention turns back to the communicator. In the background, eating utensils can be heard against a plate. He's not the one eating.]

I'm lookin' to make a foursome for whist. May have two--

If you'd care to, sir.

--Do have two. Happy to take a total of five or six, have off-hands.

One of you lot -- you know who you are -- I damn well expect t' see. Better beleive I'm keen to put you to the task at cards. Pup, if you care to, I'd like to have you join us. Easy to learn the game.

So, anyone care for a rubber or two?

Uh, hi. [ Insert awkward pause here.] Did you say foursome?

[The joys of clashing meanings.]

Well, four gentlemen at a time. Could take more, like I said. Switch off. Suppose ladies, too, if any are so inclined.

Yeah. I do know what a foursome is. [ This is probably going to get worse before it gets better. ] What're you needing one of those for exactly? How many have you got so far?

We're lookin' to start within the hour, but you can join after, if you'd like.

Sounds good to me. I'll head there as soon as I can. [ Pause. ] It'd probably be better if I watched a couple times just to make sure I know what I'm doing though. That okay with you?

Kay, number one? Name's not "pup." And it ain't "kid" or "sport" or "rookie," neither. It's Scout.

Number two...[He shrugs.] Yeah, sure, I'm in.

[Well that's a horse of a different color. At least he looks a bit nonplussed.]

Didn' think anyone else'd think t' answer to it. [But he chuckles.]

We'll be waitin'. Got at least two playin' who know the game, so you'll get a proper partner. Or, if we get one or two more, y' can learn from watchin' a rubber, if y' like.

[After all, if there are no proper stakes, there's no reason to worry much about the overall skill at first.]

...What's a rubber?

Whist is played in hands. Every hand, y' get a point for every trick you've taken after the first six. Rubber's how long it takes for a team t' get to five points.

[Tricks and rubbers and foursomes, huh? No wonder Devilman got the wrong idea.]

This game was invented in a cathouse, wasn't it?

[Now that gives him pause.]

Don' think I've met many whores who play whist. Tends t' be a gentleman's game, actually.

[A snort.]

That woulda been my second guess.

We'll be in the third common room from the blue lift, floor eight. Lookin' to get started within the hour.

[He was going to comment on the actually subject at hand, but then he put it together. Wherever his alternate is, he isn't alone.]

Of course, that doesn't mean he has to reveal everything just yet.]

[Not that he's looking forward to springing this on both of you unannounced, no.]

[He's suspicious and he's certain he has an idea as to where this is going.

Meeting within the hour, I'd say? Eighth floor, third common room from the blue lift.

Got two others, seems, but one at least doesn' know whist. Other one might, couldn' quite tell. Figure a good rubber to watch then throw 'em into the game's best way to teach 'em.

You can expect me. As can the other gentleman.

[It's a hint, almost, just to let Moran know that he's expecting exactly what this is going to become.]

Simple enough game, whist. If they've got their heads on straight, they'll pick it up quickly enough.

I'll make proper introductions when you arrive.

[He hasn't even said anything to his master about all of this.

He'll be enjoying himself far too much.]

[ The only real parts of anything this man was saying were 'cards' and that there was going to be a game. She remembered 'cards' from when Scout was explaining all the different types of games to her, not that she even remembered what any of them were called anymore. And if this type of game was easy to learn, she'd gladly try. ]

I've never played these card games before. Would it be too much trouble to teach me?

I believe we have enough, yes, but if you have a pack of cards and would care to join us, we may prove to have enough for two games at once.

I assume your preferred foursome would be of gentleman?

We've one lady already joining us, Miss Adler. I, for one, wouldn' be opposed to your company.

[ ah, but what about your master? she wants to ask, but never so openly. and thus she doesn't ask at all. ]
