Okay, so there are definitely aliens here. (Or I guess we're the aliens, technically.) It'd be good to try to compile what we know so far in one place, so here are a couple questions:
1. What are we calling them? I've heard crickets, I've heard grasshoppers, and a bunch of other stuff that seems even less polite. Can we agreee on one? Any other ideas?

2. I haven't run into any that seem chatty yet but I hear they talk in colors???

3. Do we have any idea how the people they took were chosen/singled out? Did you/they all go to a specific place or distance or do something to draw their attention? Anything in common? Looking for patterns never really worked on the ship but we could try.

So this is probably a really stupid question
but
What do dogs eat?
I mean
I know what they eat normally
it's just
Considering
our predicament
& limited resources.

Mammalia aren't exactly my area of expertise.

PS- I got a light to turn on.

So while I take a break after my super fun day getting attacked by some seriously gross looking birdwhatever animals every three minutes while totally failing to find anything worth hunting, here's a thought:

What are the chances that finding nanite canisters in the woods and then the animals getting all mutated is a coincidence? I'd bet probably pretty low. I mean I don't remember any of us going crazy aggressive, but the physical symptoms seem pretty similar, don't you think?

As far as I know we don't have the ability to test for them to be sure and I don't think there really is anything we can do about it if it is, either. (Science people please feel free to correct me, I'd be happy to be wrong!)

But it begs the question of how the nanites got out there to begin with. We should be careful until we figure out the source, because it seems like it's probably got to be something bigger than the couple closed cans we found at that crash site. Maybe? Maybe not, I don't know. But any ideas or if anybody else has spotted them anywhere, speak up and maybe we can figure this out.

They look like this:
[ A brief video clip follows, where she holds up a metal canister in illustration. ]

So, really weird Survivor-style place. When do we start voting people off the island?

Okay, okay. Seriously speaking, though. Any of you need some help with getting fires lit to cook and stuff, I'm your guy. [ He grins, evidently mischievous. Clearly, the whole new world thing hasn't dampened his spirits too much. ]

Ladies, any of you wanna have a warm body right there beside you during those really chilly nights? I'm definitely your guy. [ He snaps his fingers, a flicker of flame glowing bright at the tip before it dies out. ] Gotta tell you, I'm a great cuddler.

This isn't a Support survey because Support no longer exists, but if you have a moment:

(1) Are you working on anything you need help with?

(2) Do you have help to offer other people?

(3) Do you have any weird skills that you don't currently know how to use but might come in handy someday if we're in the middle of a crisis and need someone with e.g. an extensive knowledge of 1800s Australian history to save us all?

(4) If we make a short paper guide to where we are and what's happened, so that in the event that we're all killed in one go by acid rain or vicious dinosaur-bears but the ship continues to turn out new people, they have something to go on, what do you think should go in it?

(5) Do we have a better name than dinosaur-bears?

Thank you. :)

[ USER NAME: blake ]

blake's dating service? anyone? ( she's not looking to kick it off again okay she's just curious as to how many people remember that shit storm ) for the people who avoided that little gem, little bits of advice/tips/etc. on surviving in a wild forest with things that want to kill us? might be helpful for people who aren't used to this.

i'll start: please please please always be careful about what you stick in your mouth. don't get me wrong i can't tell you how to live your life, but i don't feel like a repeat of a whole camp tripping on hallucinogenic nuts.

So since no one else is going to talk about it...

Let's do a vote. Show of hands. How many of you think we're all alone here? A whole planet of pretty woods, jut for us. And how many of you think that we can't be alone. Maybe there's some city out there. Too bad you can't leave the camp.

And how many of you think that we're, like, totally surrounded. I hear that's a thing. Because there's spears, and they're stealing from us. Blah, blah. Tell me something real. If there's someone out there? I'd like to get to them first. I'd like to think everyone would agree with me, but I'm sure I'd be wrong.

Actually, you know what I'd love? I'd love for them to come by and try to get at my stuff. Consider this an invitation.

[ The image that appears on the mirror screen is not a person at all, but the ground. Specifically a patch of dirt, scraped smooth by the Tranquility's slide. There is a tin can half-embedded in the soil, and what looks like it might be a blanket in a lump beside it. ]

So, things are falling from the sky. Apparently? I assume I'm not the only one who noticed.

[ A hand, tanned and scabbed, enters the frame to gesture at the stuff, flicking a finger against the can. The noise it make sounds like someone flicking a tin can. (Dull in more ways than one. Also like it might hurt a little.) ]

Did anyone happen to see anything that might explain this? Did anybody find anything extra weird or interesting? I knew this planet thing was seeming too normal to be true.

[ jax is leaned back in one of the seats on the gunnery observation deck, twisting his heavy rings round his finger. the comm is propped ostensibly on his monitor while jax slouches back, ill at ease. ]

While we're chewing over Odessa's offer, I got something else to put on the table.

[ more like a heads up. jax's expression is serious, the twist of his rings a more clear show of anxiety than he's displayed on comms in his entire stretch on the ship. ]

Our rescuers've got us surrounded. Sensors are picking up a mess of ships out there. I figured that's about as worthy of discussion as everything else she and her new best friend are puttin' on the table.

[ Kate is framed from shoulders up, in a black tank and ponytail. Over her shoulder some might recognize a shuttle bay. She looks annoyed, mouth set in a thin line, dark brows angled inwards. The camera is panned so she is out of frame and instead there are rows of half-built spacecraft, smaller than the shuttles in the main bay. She talks from off-screen. ]

These are fighter craft. Attack ships. We haven't got a single one finished yet, which is kind of a problem since in case you missed it or somehow forgot, Van Rijn knows where we are now and is sending more ships after us. These need to get built, and people need to learn to fly them. And the ship's guns need repairing.

[ She turns the camera around again, still annoyed but trying very hard to be serious and persuasive and not just irritable/irritating. There's a smudge of grease on her bicep and she swipes at it with her free hand but only makes it worse. ]

I don't know shit about engineering or mechanics, I could barely put the chain back on my own bicycle before I got here. But I am pitching in and trying to learn because if we don't get this stuff done we are dead in the water. Okay? This shit is important. It is the most important, right now. So even if you're in another department already, you should be here helping with this, and if you're not in a department you should absolutely be helping with this. Also, who the hell doesn't want to learn to fly a spaceship or shoot giant spacecannons? So go sign up already and do your part, or I want to know why you aren't.

And I know people love polls, so we'll end with a poll. Are you not helping out because you're:

A) confused
B) lazy
C) hoping we all die
or
D) all of the above?

If it's A then read the things I've linked below and sign up, or ask me whatever and then sign up. I know being new sucks and is confusing and I'm happy to help but it's your asses we're trying to protect here too, so you should still be pitching in. If it's B, C, or D, still read the things below and sign up. No excuses. Everyone just please get on this, okay?

Att: volunteer sign-ups
Att: gunnery sign-ups

This is Mystique.

Some of you may recognize me from the Jump star-mapping and timekeeping projects, where I collaborated with passengers from the Science Department and Flight Deck. Some more details on those works are here and here, but we've been keeping the latest updates on those figures in other storage because of the network presence of hostile entities.

I've never joined a department. I know I'm not alone. There are more possible reasons why a passenger may have made this decision, even if that decision is only to wait. In the majority of cases, we are interested in sustaining life on this ship, and we all know that this is becoming more crucial with every passing Jump. Many of us coordinate with departments as it is.

I'm offering and requesting help with making this happen more often and more efficiently.

PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT

  • Potential volunteers: let me know what skills you have and what/kind of projects you'd be interested in working on.
  • Department heads: please let me know if you are willing to accept formal volunteers. If you want to specify a representative for contact and training from your department, do.
  • Roster of volunteers is now here.
  • Resident software experts: I've started to hammer together some basic software to make tracking easier, but I may need a tech assist too. I'm trying to keep it separate from the native nanite programming, and I doubt integration is possible, but a scheduler could be great.
PROPOSED PROJECT MANAGEMENT (pending departmental cooperation)

  • Flight Deck: complete construction of combat spacecraft and other equipment
  • Gunnery: complete construction/repairs of weaponry
  • General: maintenance, repairs, general assistance
  • Updates pending department input
My assumption is that volunteers will require supervision, training, and assistance with access to department-specific equipment, and work schedules will need to be determined. Serious disagreements should be resolved with someone getting fired; silly ones, I suspect we don't have time for.

If there is enough interest to proceed, I will make the information available in a few weeks.

[ There’s less darkness in the video this time, revealing some grease and blood stains on Resnik and Ward’s faces, and more of the hallway behind them. ]

So you finally get it? We’re all connected.

[ She seems somewhat relieved, but there’s a tired flatness to her voice as she carries on. ]

That membrane Charles was referring to is a link between all of us: it’s been there since you boarded this ship. [ A glance at Ward accompanies the mention of ‘us.’ ] I know you blame us for not explaining. [ She sounds fairly resigned to that, as if she doesn’t expect to change their minds, but she does want to explain now that she can. ] We couldn’t. But it’s trying to cut you off because you’re gaining control over it. It’s because of you that we can explain now—hold onto that. You have the power to change things, just like it’s had the power to look into you.

[ Ward's expression is grim lines edged with weariness, a lingering caution that doesn't leave his eyes. There's a thin trail of dried blood drawing a line down the side of his neck. ]

This isn't what it wanted, and this won't be the last time it tries to stop you. [ A warning. More warning than Resnik had wanted, but he doesn't look to her as he continues. Resnik, on the other hand, sends a tight, sidelong glance his way. ] You know what it can do.

So you know why we can’t let a man like van Rijn get his hands on it.

curious updates from this side of the ship, in continuation of this last post.

since then, several things have occurred in direct relation to the effects I last described. the observable ones include:
  • inc░░░░sed pain and bleedin▓▓░▓░ly treatable by physical contact with others (see medical's update re neurological damage)
  • the psychic observation being that the "ripping" sensation continues in earnest where that membrane area is attached to our minds, and physical contact triggers a "strengthening" of that area that resists that ripping
  • it also appears to make that membrane area "thinner"
  • the psychic whiteno▓░ going on behind the membrane seems to have increased in activity (imagine an angry beehive)
  • as of latest observance, I can sense the ripping/pulling become weaker
  • last but not ▓▓░st, ▓▓░cinations/projections of various stripes tailored to past experiences or ▓▓░chological states
  • here's the thing.

when I talked about this presence before, I talked about its influence exerted over us -- as if the membrane were a window, and the ░░░ng on the other side of it is shading through its influence like light.

what I've begun to sense is the opposite:
I believe we are imposing control over or towards "it". I think it is trying to detach from us, for whatever reason, and we are collectively not letting it break free, and this resistance is only increased via physical proximity, and the more the merri░░░░░

in extension and in support of that idea, I think we have more power than we realised.
in the past week, I have ob▓▓▓ed our ability to 'find' people and dimin░▓ the effects of our projections. not only are we overcoming these projections ourselves, but it's very possible that we are in fact generating them by accident, and focus is allowing us to tame them. I think we are even changing our environments around us to 'find' people more efficiently, however subconsciously, and that this "thinni▓▓░ of the membrane is granting us access to these abilities.

I implore▓▓▓▓o remain in contact with others to avoid harm. those on the passenger quarters end should gather together and equally try to help people get to safety. the clock is ░icking towards next jump and we have friends on the wrong side of the ship.

we need to st░░░ ░onsidering how to get them back and whether we have the power to do so.

Obviously we have a few unexpected guests with us now but there's actually one more everyone should know about. Some of you may be familiar with the name Felix Laurens. Or the face, he looks like this (and really loves having his picture taken):

For those who don't know he was captain of the Scylla, a pirate ship that tried to raid the TQ during jump cycle 17. I'm not going to recount his whole history, you can find more info here. To sum up: as far as we knew, Ward murdered him along with his captive crew during that jump. You may have seen him on the network since then anyway. We don't really know how or why, but he in some fashion survived, trapped. A friend and I finally found him, and he's been in quarantine in Medical for the last couple months.

We've let him out now. He's surly and weird but we don't believe he's an immediate danger to anyone. He hasn't behaved violently with us at all, he just wanted to get out of that place and have access to a gravity couch. So if you see him around or at the jump, a few suggestions:
  • Don't freak out, and please don't attack him

  • If you see him standing outside a normal door like a kitchen or library or something, please let him in. He doesn't have nanites, so he can't actually open any doors in this place himself.

  • If anyone has any ideas how to get him nanites, please let me know that also.

  • Do keep an eye on him and do be on your guard. He may not have any personal desire to harm us, but he is susceptible to the same types of compulsion that we all are, that make us do things we would never otherwise.

  • If he does or says something strange, or goes somewhere he shouldn't be, let me or Charles Xavier or Dr. Gallo know asap.

  • If there's a problem, also let us know and we will handle it.

  • If Ward or Resnik show up, let us know that, too. We think they'd have come by now if they really wanted to finish the job that badly, but who knows.
  • There isn't much about this that I can really explain, but if you have questions this is the place for them.

ALSO: if anyone has a spare comm, let me know? I know there were a few around somewhere at some point.

[ Home vs. the Tranquility is an obvious choice for most people. For the ones from somewhere particularly awful, the ship's the better option; and for some, there isn't much of an option at all.

Fitz had spent several months thinking he was part of the latter group. He'd thought home meant certain death, so he should appreciate cheating it while he had the chance. Since that had been proven wrong, home had resumed being the obvious choice, despite all its complications — but now Jemma's here, and things are somehow better than they'd been back at the Playground. Add to that a friendly research team offering help to the passengers of the TQ, and the end result is dwelling on questions he probably shouldn't be.

And a broad question for the network, minus much context.
    ]

Whenever the ship's docked somewhere, it's been too dangerous to stay. But if it wasn't, or if you could get off the ship without going home, would you? If it were possible to go somewhere safe. Different, and not home, but safe.

[ one day octavia will have something useful to say on the network.

today, unfortunately, is not that day, and the morning after the jump the tranquility is blessed with this little piece of poetry.
    ]

    ATTENTION! SEEKING:
HOTTIES FOR A LITTLE FUN WITH A CUTE (sometimes) BUBBLY BLONDE

    MUST:
    - not be a dick (non negotiable)
    - be attractive (subjective so you know feel free to put your hand up even if you don't think you're a babe)
    - have a sensitive side (our blonde here is a little on the shy side when it comes to the lip to lip action)
    - not be as dull as watching paint dry (please for the love of all that is good know how to hold a conversation)
    - don't be super old. that would be weird.

applications can be made here for review by me (octavia) before being passed onto the blonde. just so you know, she doesn't wind up with anyone weird or creepy.

good work guys, back to your regularly scheduled work or whatever.

[ and, as an afterthought: ]

also, bellamy blake is gone, whatever that means. home, hopefully. just in case he managed to actually make any friends here despite the handicap of being a huge dork. thought you should know.

    [ now she's done. ]

Okay everyone, stop trying to figure out what the hell we do about all of these messages telling us what to do and instead answer this one very important question:

Ward, Resnik, Laurens. If you absolutely had to, who do you kill, who do you fuck, who do you believe is telling us even a tiny bit of the truth marry?*

*No, Johanna and people who think like Johanna, you cannot kill all of them. It has to be one of each. That's how the game works.

[ Rough around the edges in an oil-stained jumpsuit with rolled up sleeves, Devon Resnik broadcasts from a darkened corridor—she sounds grim and looks even more frustrated, like this was the "I told you so" she didn't want coming. One hand reaches up to scratch the spot between her eyebrows. ]

We expanded your access because we thought you had the common sense to keep yourselves alive, not so you could cast off one another's warnings and dig yourselves an early grave. Everyone on this ship is aware of our smiling friend: what makes you want to chat up an anomalous transmission on the network?

[ Her hand drops, and she fixes the screen with a serious look. The frustration drains into her usual: flat, no bullshit. Just the facts. ]

Don't fool yourselves into believing that Van Rijn's people want to help you.

[ From behind her, a much more clean-cut figure with dark hair and broad shoulders approaches. As Resnik takes a half-step to the side of the frame to make room for him, Ward explains further, though his voice is no less flat. ] They want the Tranquility. They're going to try anything to get it, including making promises they can't keep. If you receive any messages from them, don't engage or antagonize. You have no idea what these people are capable of.

[ Resnik turns to glance at Ward over her shoulder, something wary in her eyes: it's met with an equally dour look in his. The look holds for a moment before she turns back to the terminal. ] Seems like we've lost them for now, but they're persistent. Report all communications with individuals identifying themselves as agents of Van Rijn immediately.

[ With those orders stated, she cuts the feed. ]

[ OOC NOTE ▒ Direct your comments to either Resnik or Ward by specifying their name in the subject line. Comments without a name in the subject line will be treated as a question for both. ]
