BE ADVISED. NEW ARRIVAL ARMED AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS. LEFT MED BAY, POSSIBLY HEADING TO THE HIGHER LEVELS LOOKING FOR A WAY TO ESCAPE.

[ There’s less darkness in the video this time, revealing some grease and blood stains on Resnik and Ward’s faces, and more of the hallway behind them. ]

So you finally get it? We’re all connected.

[ She seems somewhat relieved, but there’s a tired flatness to her voice as she carries on. ]

That membrane Charles was referring to is a link between all of us: it’s been there since you boarded this ship. [ A glance at Ward accompanies the mention of ‘us.’ ] I know you blame us for not explaining. [ She sounds fairly resigned to that, as if she doesn’t expect to change their minds, but she does want to explain now that she can. ] We couldn’t. But it’s trying to cut you off because you’re gaining control over it. It’s because of you that we can explain now—hold onto that. You have the power to change things, just like it’s had the power to look into you.

[ Ward's expression is grim lines edged with weariness, a lingering caution that doesn't leave his eyes. There's a thin trail of dried blood drawing a line down the side of his neck. ]

This isn't what it wanted, and this won't be the last time it tries to stop you. [ A warning. More warning than Resnik had wanted, but he doesn't look to her as he continues. Resnik, on the other hand, sends a tight, sidelong glance his way. ] You know what it can do.

So you know why we can’t let a man like van Rijn get his hands on it.

curious updates from this side of the ship, in continuation of this last post.

since then, several things have occurred in direct relation to the effects I last described. the observable ones include:
  • inc░░░░sed pain and bleedin▓▓░▓░ly treatable by physical contact with others (see medical's update re neurological damage)
  • the psychic observation being that the "ripping" sensation continues in earnest where that membrane area is attached to our minds, and physical contact triggers a "strengthening" of that area that resists that ripping
  • it also appears to make that membrane area "thinner"
  • the psychic whiteno▓░ going on behind the membrane seems to have increased in activity (imagine an angry beehive)
  • as of latest observance, I can sense the ripping/pulling become weaker
  • last but not ▓▓░st, ▓▓░cinations/projections of various stripes tailored to past experiences or ▓▓░chological states
  • here's the thing.

when I talked about this presence before, I talked about its influence exerted over us -- as if the membrane were a window, and the ░░░ng on the other side of it is shading through its influence like light.

what I've begun to sense is the opposite:
I believe we are imposing control over or towards "it". I think it is trying to detach from us, for whatever reason, and we are collectively not letting it break free, and this resistance is only increased via physical proximity, and the more the merri░░░░░

in extension and in support of that idea, I think we have more power than we realised.
in the past week, I have ob▓▓▓ed our ability to 'find' people and dimin░▓ the effects of our projections. not only are we overcoming these projections ourselves, but it's very possible that we are in fact generating them by accident, and focus is allowing us to tame them. I think we are even changing our environments around us to 'find' people more efficiently, however subconsciously, and that this "thinni▓▓░ of the membrane is granting us access to these abilities.

I implore▓▓▓▓o remain in contact with others to avoid harm. those on the passenger quarters end should gather together and equally try to help people get to safety. the clock is ░icking towards next jump and we have friends on the wrong side of the ship.

we need to st░░░ ░onsidering how to get them back and whether we have the power to do so.

[The video feed turns to reveal Emily looking a bit worse for wear from the illness or whatever it is that is going around lately causing the headaches and the bleeding. She has never really addressed the network before, mostly because it felt superfluous and that was typically Nolan's thing anyway but this was different and probably an important thing to discuss if anything]

Hey. So I am not really sure where to start with this— I know there's been the headaches and the bleeding that has been already mentioned and still going on but lately I've been slowly been getting bits and pieces of dreams or maybe something more like someone else's memories that happened before in this place.

Anyway with everything that's happening right now, I figure it can't be a coincidence— so I was wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar?

[ooc; Referring to the stasis coma dreams! Feel free to use this as a general discussion/info post and threadjack if you want too]

[ Hey, Tranquility! It's your resident busybody who has no authority or jurisdiction, and no justifiable reason to be taking point on this one, here to kindly inform you he's decided to try and take point on this one. He appears solemnly, wearing that well-perfected dangerous hunter face. How scary. Such intimidating. ]

I'm gonna make this quick and to the point.

[ He declares, voice barking out frank orders like a damn drill sergeant or something. ]

Those people on board- those are people. Not some... evil... dictatorship, not a bunch of spies from the goddamn dark world, not soul-sucking ringwraiths here to steal your jumpsuits. They're just people, and they need a rescue, not a lynch mob.

[ Have a firm and pointed look, because he knows some of you are planning on shooting first and asking questions later. Screw that. ]

I'm going. Anyone who wants to come along and help, I'm leaving in an hour. And before you sign up just to turn around and put a bullet in them as soon as we get there, I want to make one thing clear.

[ And let the cold, dark look in his eye carry just how serious he is about this: ]

You try anything stupid, I'll knock your ass out myself and leave you in the hallways for whatever's hungry.

    [ end transmission. ]

( after 1 IC hour (so a few tags) Dean will abruptly stop replying and will be focusing on surviving the hallways. anyone is more than welcome to tag along to his big ole rescue group of friendship and mistake-making! )

[ Natasha’s face on the screen is blank and unreadable, but for those that know her, she’s probably very unamused. She doesn't like it when questions aren't answered, and even less so when she’s actively told not to ask. It just makes her want to ask more.

But this line isn't secure, and Natasha knows better than to push her luck this early on. Thinking of this like a mission is the easiest way to deal with it. ]
Hi. Natasha Romanoff. Some of you have apparently already met me, even though I don't remember it. I've heard a rumor that SHIELD agents are here, so if you could check in with me, I'd appreciate it.

[ As for work, she'll deal with that later. Right now, she has to get settled and get information from people who might actually give it to her. She considers a moment, and then tilts the corner of her mouth up into a tiny smile. ]

Also, I'm into collecting fossils, so if anyone's seen Captain Steve Rogers around, let me know.

recently a handful of us had made contact with an outside source - a certain lina barnez and joshua sachin. some of you may still be confused by their most recent attempt to communicate.

what we know is that they work on behalf of van rijn, who is supposedly the prime minister of alexandria and is behind the construction of this ship.

lina and joshua have been described as "bloodhounds" for the prime minister, who is undoubtedly looking to get back his ship. what this entails for us, we don't yet know.

have been on the tranquility since the first jump, and recall the events described in their transmission. a timeline of those events as we experienced them can be read upon in the welcome manual. can answer any further questions if you still have any.

for those of you who are unaware, the strela outpost was occupied by a population who appeared to have been in synch with each other. we later discovered that they assimilated people into what we know as a hivemind, and had attempted to round us up in efforts to become part of that assimilation. we managed to escape, but it would seem that some time after our departure the strela outpost has suffered an "accident" that had wiped out all of its inhabitants.

like the outpost, arima was a colony populated by living people at the time we were there. plenty of survivors had been left behind when we departed. however, lina and joshua insist that the people of the colony were all killed when they had been very much alive when we had left, but only after they had expressed hostility towards our crew - not much unlike the temperament we were met by the people of strela.

there's a possibility that these locations we have stopped at were affected because of the tranquility itself. at least, that's what the people working for van rijn seem to believe. whether or not that's true, can't say.

after all, don't believe everything they tell you.

am concerned that there may be a chance that whatever so-called "phenomena" that's affected the people we have previously encountered may be affecting us in some way as well.

    and that's where we're at.

    apologies.

[ooc: Feel free to threadjack and discuss amongst each other in this post. I don't mind!]

Boy, that was a close one! That gas formation was a clever trick.

    Hello there.

I know I've already spoken to some of you—I had hoped to do this individually—but it appears we need to move things along more quickly than we'd realized. That ship of yours seems eager to shake us, and we simply can't let that happen.

My name is Lina Barnez. The rest of the team and I have been working on contacting the Tranquility for some time. Unfortunately, our tech isn't perfectly compatible with what you're running on. It hasn't been easy, but we're managing. I don't know how long we'll have.

We're here to help you, but in order to do that, we'll need you to help us. You've been through a lot on this ship: it's a miracle so many of you are still with us. We'd like to make sure you stay that way, but we can only do that if you're completely honest with us.

We know about the events on Strela, the Cyllene and Arima, as well as the Scylla. What happened to those poor people was not your fault, and you have my word that we have no plans to hold you responsible for those events.

But we need to work together to make sure it doesn't happen again. The more you tell us about what's been going on aboard the Tranquility, the more we can do.

[ NOTE: All conversations will be cut off before too long by the engines suddenly powering back up, and the jump alarm sounding to alert characters to proceed to medbay immediately. ]

On behalf of SEC; If you've been contacted by an unknown source, especially one that may or may not be a violent and potentially sadistic AI, don't follow it into the corridors. No matter what it promises, it should go without saying that it's very dangerous to follow a potential terrorist's orders, especially if it's leading you into unmapped parts of the ship. Anyone who's had contact with suspicious broadcasts should speak with COMM or SEC so that we can piece the stories together.

... Another thing. For those who might've known Javik, who was here a few months ago and was killed at the start of the 33rd jump; did he ever mention anything about something called a "beacon?" Or, did he leave behind any personal possessions? Thanks in advance.

    Shepard out.

[It's taken Cora several days to work herself around to posting this, considering different people she could ask directly, considering ways to word it that don't sound like she's going crazy. She still doesn't know if she's achieved the latter, but she's reached the point of needing some reassurance that going crazy isn't what's actually happening.]

I need to know if anyone's noticed anything strange in medical. Where the pods are.

[ The feed clicks on to a hand-held view of Ripley, but the screen's steady. Just close enough to make the background difficult to make out, at first, though a glimpse of green probably makes it easy to fill in the blanks. ]

My name is Ellen Ripley. [ Lieutenant, but something tells her the rank's useless, here. ] I arrived with the last jump. Thank you to those who were kind enough to fill me in on the basics.

[ Gently wry. "Kind" is a generous term for the attitude she got for her medbay interrogations, though the gratitude's honest all the same. For the most part, her expression and voice remain formal, all patient neutrality. ]

I'd appreciate it if you'd humor a few more questions — I apologize if any of it's repetitive.

Are you familiar with the name Weyland-Yutani?

Two: are we aware of the ship's purpose? Not what we're doing here, or what's happened to it since; I'd like to know what it was built for.

And if any of you have first-hand experience with the creatures in the hallways, I'd like a detailed description.

[ She's a long way from home. That's what everyone keeps telling her, except there's far too much déjà vu in the scattered records she's managed to get her hands on to ignore. It wouldn't be the first time she'd woken up in her own world only to find it slightly askew.

And while this probably sounds more like business than pleasure, it'll admittedly be nice to have some actual conversations. Speaking of social skills, she ends off with an even:

    Thank you for your time.

[ For perhaps the first time over the network, Elizabeth doesn't exactly look chipper. She's fidgeting, pulling at bits of her hair and moving as she talks. ]

Hello. I... I was hoping that I could ask you all your opinions, based on your own experiences. I realize that what I'm asking is situational and... well, really, private, but I really do need advice.

... When you have to kill, or... had to, before, what was it that allowed you to reason through it? Even if the act is for the greater good, it's still the taking of a life. Someone told me once that it was a necessity, though a terrible one, and I know now that he was right. Still, though, if it wasn't for survival-- for your own survival-- [ She pauses, reconsiders. ] If someone else was in danger--an innocent--is it any easier?

[ Clearly, she's never killed anyone before. Elizabeth chews on her lip, very much agitated. ]

Oh! This isn't about anyone on the ship, not at all. I'm only wondering for when I return to Columbia.

I can't say I know very much about space, or how this spaceship works, but I have a few questions.

What does it run on, and who's piloting?

And is there a reason that we can stop by at the nearest planet and get off this thing? Anything has to be better than this, right?

    [There's a pause.]

If these are stupid questions, I'd rather you just explain why, and spare me the sarcasm.

Brethren aboard, I come to you today with an enquiry most... well, most abnormal.

    I wonder-

[A pause here, squinting, as if not entirely sure how to phrase such a thing. Perhaps it will sound like lunacy, but then, he is very used to being called eccentric anyway. So maybe simply coming out with it was for the best.]

-I wonder if anyone has before been contacted, on their devices, by someone outside of the ship?

Someone not aboard, who does not even know the name Tranquility, and perhaps is not even very familiar with the technology here, as I was once not... Someone curious about us, and this place.

[And unwilling to say why, though he should not wish to alarm anyone by making this sound more cloak-and-dagger than it ought.]

Has anyone else ever communicated with such a person? A voice in the void?

[ Skye's mostly watched the network, sending a few texts, but otherwise avoided people in any form since she woke up here. She's getting a little tired of ducking behind doors, though. It's like being back in her van and after being on the bus for so long, she's actually feeling lonely and claustrophobic at the idea. There has to be someone here with useful answers. ]

So is everyone here from Earth or what?

Anyone heard of SHIELD? Or HYDRA? I know someone who's really into Captain America. Is that a thing here? Is it too much of a leap to assume that you've heard of America at all?

    so what do we know?

    [ ooc: threadjacking encouraged! ]

    [audio:]

[L’s voice is the voice he’d use for any public announcement: smooth, measured, calm, not betraying much of the intense irritation and frustration that the network crash has caused him in the previous few weeks.]

Greetings. This is Ryuuzaki, speaking for the Communications Department.

The recent problems with the network were caused by an attack on our systems by a particularly malicious virus. Its effect was to systematically overwrite existing material with random characters. The department itself had no control over this and no effective way to stop it.

When network service returned, it was because a fail-safe rebooted the network software itself, something we’ve never had the authority to do -- or, to be honest, the desire. We are now active on the ship’s original network, and have learned that the system that we’ve always used in the past was actually a subnetwork.

[As far as he’s concerned, every bit of this is a clue about why posts from prior to the arrival of the first wave of passengers are only sporadically available. Was the network previously rebooted in response to an infection with the same virus, or something even worse? That doesn’t explain how they would have ended up on a subnetwork, but it might explain much of the rest of it.]

As some of you may have noticed, nothing posted prior to the network’s return has been accessible since then. One of the functions of the Communications department is to archive network activity, and fortunately, we were able to back up the vast majority of the network as it existed before the emergency shut-down.

I’ll be posting what I can of that archive in a minute. However, please be aware that we don’t have the technical capacity to make this available to you in the format you’re used to, and that any posts from the old system that had been subject to an encryption created by one of us are completely incompatible with the new one.

    [A beat of silence.]

Related to that: while we’ve been trying, no one in the department has yet been able to create new encryptions that work on this network, and the built-in privacy function seems to be much stronger and more reliable than it was before. We can’t say that the privacy function will be reliable forever -- very likely, it will be broken in the future, which will compromise the security of anything you’ve done using it -- but it appears that it’s currently dependable. This also does not rule out the possibility that someone we’re not aware of has the ability to break it already.

If you’re able to create an encryption that the network will accept, or if you simply have skills in this area that you’d be willing to put to work, please let us know, and please consider joining the department. [He is now turning on the charm, such as it is, and sounds slightly wittier and less serious than he had earlier in his announcement.] We’re not short-staffed at the moment, but we wouldn’t want to let your talents go to waste.

Those of you who don’t have talents in this area should consider joining another department. Agriculture could certainly use your help, even if it’s only for a few hours a week.

[The lightness in his tone now vanishes.]

On an associated note, if you receive any anonymous messages in your inbox, particularly from someone calling themselves Lina, or attempting to strike up a conversation and fish for information, please let us know. The same goes for any situation in which your communication device otherwise behaves in an unexpected way, and if you can visit the Comms Hub with your communicator while any of these things are still ongoing, so much the better. We’re located near the Bridge.

We’re aware that it’s common to come from a place where this kind of network communication is unusual. If you need help learning how your device works, let us know. We also have several programs which can be added to it, and some people may be able to make music or game files available to you. Those were programmed for your communicators, not the network itself, so it appears that they’re still compatible.

Finally… [a hint of regret enters his voice]... as of the jump several days ago, Clara Oswald has left the ship.

If you have any further problems involving the network, please contact me or Bail Organa.

    Thank you. Comms out.

    --

    [Filtered to Tyke | Private]

If we learn that someone onboard has falsified an anonymous conversation similar to the one I just mentioned on the network, particularly if they do so in the future, can Security consider a suitable punishment? I had to discuss the messages here, but doing it so publicly is likely to encourage pranksters. I'd really prefer that they didn't waste my time.

Likewise, we’re still looking into the matter of the virus. If it turns out that someone is responsible for it, I’d like them to be subject to brig time.

    --

[OOC: Please note that even the most talented hackers won’t be able to get into posts marked private for at least three months, and new characters will probably need about that much time to get up to speed with this system after they come in! It will not be a smooth road, either: the new system has many built-in blocks and tricks, and some hacking attempts will even flag SEC.

The link within the post is to an open Comms log. Please have your character drop in if they're interested in being tutored in the ins and outs of smartphones, or if they want to ask a question, or if they want to bug someone who's trying to work.

The batch archive of posts from the old network is here! It covers everything prior to November 1, 2014, or a week before the 37th jump by TQ Reckoning. Notes related to technical aspects are on that post.]

    Hey everyone.

You probably remember that back when we were figuring out that the nanites were making us sick we discovered a room with management consoles for the nanites and grav couches and stuff. We haven't had much luck getting real access to the systems to see how the changes were made, so we're having to get pretty old-school to try to find anything out. One of the things we did was dust for fingerprints (yes, really). We found some, obviously, and what we're hoping to do now is narrow them down and see if there are any that don't belong to passengers. If there are that could help confirm that there are other humans still physically present on the ship, which would be good to know.

To do that, obviously we need to rule out passengers and for that we need your fingerprints for comparison. (Added: For those of you unfamiliar with the practice: each person has a different pattern of ridges on their fingertips and when you touch things you often leave impressions of them behind. If we record what your fingers' pattern looks like we can compare it to the marks we found on the machine and rule out that it was you that touched it.)

This isn't compulsory, I'm not going to come knock on your door and force you to get printed or anything like that, and we're not going to use your prints for anything but this without your permission. But it would really be nice to figure this out, so please consider doing it.

We'll be set up in the lounge on 005 most of the time, or you can schedule with me separately if that's easier. Thanks.

(ooc: if you don't want to comment icly but your character definitely would/wouldn't show up to get printed, feel free to drop a [not here] to let me know!)
